Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) for Pain Management
Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS)
Treatment Overview
Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) is a minimally invasive technique designed to manage chronic pain by targeting specific nerves outside the spinal cord. It is especially effective for pain in localized areas like the arms, legs, feet or face.
How the Procedure Works
During the procedure, a small, thin electrode is implanted near a nerve that is causing pain. This electrode is connected to a pulse generator, which sends mild electrical impulses to the nerve. These impulses interfere with the nerve’s ability to transmit pain signals to the brain, providing relief.
Who Benefits from PNS
PNS is beneficial for treating various chronic pain conditions, particularly those affecting localized areas. Conditions that can benefit from PNS include:
- Post-Surgical Pain. Pain that persists after surgery.
- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Pain and sensitivity in a specific limb, often following an injury.
- Occipital Neuralgia. Neuropathic pain that originates from the occipital nerves located at the base of the skull.
- Pain in Specific Areas. Such as the arms, legs, feet or face.
- Peripheral Nerve Injuries. Pain originating from injury or irritation of peripheral nerves.
PNS provides targeted relief for these conditions, offering a minimally invasive and reversible alternative when other treatments have not been effective.
What to Expect
- Trial Procedure: Initially, you’ll undergo a trial period to evaluate PNS. Temporary electrodes are placed near the targeted nerve under local anesthesia and connected to an external stimulator that delivers electrical impulses.
- Trial Period: During the one-week trial, monitor your pain relief and daily activities. After the trial, the temporary electrodes are removed and you’ll review your results with your provider to determine if a permanent implant is suitable.
- Implant Procedure: If the trial is successful, a permanent PNS device is implanted. Follow-up appointments will track your progress and adjust settings as needed. The device is reversible and can be turned off or removed if necessary.
