Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation (DRG) for Pain Management
Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation (DRG)
Treatment Overview
Dorsal Root Ganglion (DRG) stimulation is a minimally invasive procedure for managing neuropathic pain in specific areas, such as the hip, knee, foot, groin or rib. The procedure provides targeted relief and offers a reversible alternative for nerve problems that haven’t responded to conservative treatments.
How the Procedure Works
During the procedure, a small electrode is placed near the dorsal root ganglion — a cluster of nerve cells that transmit pain signals. This electrode is connected to a pulse generator implanted under the skin. When activated, the device sends electrical pulses to the DRG, interrupting pain signals before they reach the brain.
Who Benefits from DRG Stimulation
We began using DRG stimulation to address challenging cases of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), which causes severe pain and hypersensitivity in an extremity. Our first patient saw immediate improvement and hundreds have reported similar results since then. We now use DRG stimulation for:
- Localized Neuropathic Pain: Those suffering from chronic pain in specific areas such as the hip, knee, foot, groin or rib.
- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS): Individuals with CRPS, particularly when the pain is confined to one area of the body.
- Pelvic Pain or Groin Neuralgia: Those experiencing severe pain in the pelvic region or groin that has not responded to other treatments.
- Phantom Limb Pain: Pain perceived in a limb that has been amputated.
What to Expect
- Trial Procedure: First, you’ll have a trial period to assess the effectiveness of DRG stimulation. Temporary electrodes are placed near the dorsal root ganglion under anesthesia and connected to an external stimulator that delivers electrical impulses.
- Trial Period: During the one-week trial, you’ll track your pain relief and daily activities. Afterward, the temporary electrodes are removed and you’ll discuss your results and decide if a permanent implant is appropriate.
- Implant Procedure: If the trial is successful, you will be scheduled for a permanent DRG stimulator implant. Follow-up appointments will monitor progress and adjust settings. The device is reversible and can be turned off or removed if needed.
