Epidural Lysis of Adhesions for Pain Management

Epidural Lysis of Adhesions

Treatment Overview

Epidural lysis of adhesions is a medical procedure used to treat chronic back or leg pain caused by scar tissue (adhesions) in the epidural space around the spinal cord. These adhesions can form after surgery, injury or inflammation and may compress nerves, leading to pain.

How the Procedure Works

During the procedure, a specialized catheter is inserted into the region of scar tissue inside the spinal canal. The catheter delivers medications, such as steroids, saline or enzymes, to break down the scar tissue and reduce inflammation, thereby relieving pressure on the nerves and reducing pain.

Who Benefits from an Epidural Lysis of Adhesions

  • Individuals with Chronic Back or Leg Pain: Those experiencing persistent pain due to scar tissue in the epidural space, often following surgery or injury.
  • Post-Surgical Pain: Individuals who have developed adhesions after spinal surgery, leading to nerve compression and ongoing pain.
  • Individuals Unresponsive to Conservative Treatments: Those whose pain has not improved with physical therapy, medications or epidural steroid injections.
  • Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS): Individuals who continue to experience pain after spinal surgery may benefit from this procedure to address scar tissue and reduce nerve irritation.

While anesthetic agents offer temporary pain relief, specialized physical therapy is necessary to sustain improvement after the procedure. Our physical therapy team is available to support your recovery once the scar tissue has been reduced.
