Epidural Blood Patch for Pain Management
Epidural Blood Patch
Treatment Overview
An epidural blood patch (EBP) treatment is a procedure performed to relieve spinal headaches, which sometimes occur after a myelogram, epidural steroid injection, spinal anesthesia or back surgery. This type of headache occurs when a tear or hole in the membrane that covers the spinal cord causes a spinal fluid leak.
How the Procedure Works
During the epidural blood patch procedure, a small amount of blood is drawn from a vein in the arm and then injected into the epidural space in the spine near the site of the spinal leak. The injected blood forms a clot, which seals the leak and restores the normal pressure of the spinal fluid.
Who Benefits from an Epidural Blood Patch
- Individuals with Spinal Headaches: The procedure is particularly beneficial for individuals who experience severe headaches following a spinal tap or epidural anesthesia. These headaches are typically positional, worsening when sitting or standing and improving when lying down.
- Those with Persistent Pain: An epidural blood patch provides rapid and often complete relief for those whose spinal headaches do not resolve with conservative treatments like bed rest, hydration or caffeine.
- Individuals with Spinal Fluid Leaks: It is also helpful for individuals with a spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leak, which can cause similar headaches without a preceding medical procedure.
The epidural blood patch is a relatively safe and effective procedure that provides relief for most individuals within a short period after the injection.
