Nura Celebrates Pain Awareness Month
SEPTEMBER 1, 2024
What is Pain Awareness Month?
First created by the American Chronic Pain Association in 2001, Pain Awareness Month is recognized every September and is a time to raise awareness around pain, pain management, and the work pain professionals do. Pain affects people in many ways, and it is important to reflect on the needs of people living with it. From access to care, the stigma surrounding pain, the mental toll, and overall treatment options, it is important to keep the conversation going. Here are some national organizations that offer valuable resources for learning more about Pain Awareness Month and ways to stay involved.
Pain Awareness Month is important to Nura because it aligns with our mission to improve the lives of individuals living with chronic pain. This month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the complexities of pain, educate the public and healthcare community, and advocate for better pain management practices. It also underscores our commitment to advancing pain treatment through innovative approaches and compassionate care, ensuring that those affected by chronic pain receive the support and relief they need.

Whether you or someone you know is living with chronic pain, there are several ways you can try and cope with it.
- Check-in with yourself or a loved one. It could be you writing in a journal, having a phone call with a friend, having a Zoom call with family, or sending a simple text message to a loved one. Expressing your feelings is helpful, so keep your support system close.
- Try to get some gentle exercise. While the weather is still nice, walk around the block or to your favorite coffee shop. Take 10 minutes to do a stretching routine. Go for a swim at the community pool. Any movement is good movement. Be sure not to push yourself too hard, especially if the pain increases.
- Relax. Being in pain can cause stress on the body and our minds. Find ways to relax, whether it is breathing techniques, reading a book, or listening to calm music. These are all ways to take a moment for yourself and try not to think about any pain you are feeling.
- Eat well and stay hydrated. It’s important to fuel our bodies with nutritious foods and drink plenty of water. A diet of protein, fruits and vegetables, grains, and even your favorite dessert every so often is a great way to ensure you get everything you need. Remember, it’s all about balance!
