Every October we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month. It is a time to raise awareness of the benefits of physical therapy and all the good work physical therapists and physical therapist assistants do.

At Nura, physical therapy is a key part of our approach to treating chronic pain. Our team of physical therapists are trained to help target the source of your pain. We asked them to share the top five benefits of pain management PT and a few facts about pain education.

Top 5 Benefits of PT

  1. Pain Relief – Using targeted exercises, physical therapy can help reduce pain by improving mobility and strengthening muscles.
  2. Improved Function & Mobility – Moving and stretching your body in PT sessions helps improve your ability to perform daily activities and alleviate stiffness of joints and muscles.
  3. Increased Strength & Flexibility – Physical therapy allows you to build muscle strength and flexibility, which can support and stabilize areas of pain.
  4. Education & Self-Management – Our team will help educate you on proper posture, body mechanics, and different self-care strategies to help you better manage your pain.
  5. Prevention of Recurrence Consistent physical therapy helps address the causes of pain and promotes proper movement to prevent future injuries.

Pain Education Facts

  1. Most of the time, people associate pain with tissue damage and vice versa. Pain does not always equal tissue damage. It is possible to have pain without experiencing tissue damage, and we can have tissue damage without experiencing pain.
  2. Have you ever heard the saying “no pain, no gain”? Well, this saying is NOT true and is not something people with chronic pain should follow. You do not have to experience increased pain to make progress. At Nura, our team recommends a saying more like “nudge at the pain” and then back off, which slowly builds the nervous system’s tolerance to activity.
  3. Breathing is one of the most important tools when undergoing physical therapy treatment. Diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing, is a technique that helps to relax the diaphragm. By breathing slowly and deeply using your abdomen, you can reduce stress and tension through the spine, improve ribcage mobility, relax pelvic floor muscles, and strengthen deep abdominal muscles.
